BEBC Black Pitch Contest

Black businesses and entrepreneurs in Canada face significant barriers due to systemic racism and lack of access to essential financial support. To address this, a non-profit organization, Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society (BEBC) has launched the national Black Pitch Contest, offering up to $25,000 to Black entrepreneurs who often face challenges in accessing business opportunities. The contest aims to provide a “barrier free” application process, requiring only a brief application and a 2-minute YouTube video, in contrast to the lengthy and complex application processes typically encountered.

The top 5 finalists of the contest will have the opportunity to pitch their business ideas live at the Black Business Summit, which is set to take place on May 24th and 25th, 2024 at the Emily Carr University, 520 E 1st Ave, Vancouver, BC V5T 0H2. Winners of the contest will be awarded at the summit, offering an important platform for Black entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas. Additionally, finalists will receive access to beneficial resources, including Advisory Circles, 1-on-1 Mentoring, and Pitch Bootcamps, to further develop their business ventures.

Last year’s winner, Micheline Khan of Althea Therapy, used the prize money to launch an online program called ‘Reclaim’ aimed at providing culturally responsive tools to manage stress and anxiety, addressing mental health disparities and destigmatizing therapy for communities of color. The founder of the contest, Jackee Kasandy, understands the challenges faced by Black entrepreneurs firsthand, having experienced difficulties accessing loans and grants early in her entrepreneurial journey.

This year’s Black Pitch Contest includes public voting for the first time, engaging the audience and allowing them to play a role in selecting impactful pitches. Finalists will also have the opportunity to pitch in person for the first time at the Black Business Summit, offering a unique and empowering experience during Black History Month. The summit is free for youth and aims to provide a safe space for Black entrepreneurs to discuss their experiences and break through business barriers. With significant updates and a promising program, the contest is expected to attract a larger number of applicants, building on the success of the inaugural pitch contest. Deadline for submissions is February 16th 2024.
